What to expect
During your appointment, lesions of concern will be examined using a specialised instrument called a dermatoscope. This allows for accurate assessment and differentiating between benign or malignant lesions. I will always offer a full skin screening as part of your appointment.
Depending on the outcome, we will discuss the diagnosis and treatment options. This will depend on the nature of your skin lesion.
Some superficial skin cancers, sun damage and pre cancerous’ lesions can be treated with a topical chemotherapy (cream) or non surgical modalities such as cryotherapy.
If your mole or skin lesion requires surgical excision or removal, this will always be discussed first. This is to ensure you understand the possible diagnosis, what the procedure entails (including cost), recovery, and risk of any scarring or other adverse outcomes. Any potential for further treatments will also be considered with you. Consultant prior to surgical treatment is essential, and will always be tailored to your individual needs.
Timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer is crucial in order to achieve the best outcomes.
Some benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions can also be problematic or cause distress, because the appearance is unacceptable to you or it causes you discomfort. In this situation, we will discuss what your concerns and preferences are, with a view to suitable treatment options (including removal, if appropriate).
